challenger approaching! ▼ » 6PM, Thursday.
Mabelle looked up at the art museum, eyeing it over curiously.
This was a Pokemon Gym, right?
Just deciding to take the Gym challenge this last year, she hadn't quite expected the sheer scope of it all. After all, it was rather enormous- even the outsides were full of resplendent colors and shapes- and the Gym Leader themself was said to be a little bit of an odd bird.
A Bunnelby thumped along beside her with every step, recently caught and trained and now fitted with a small ribbon around its right ear to match its Trainer. Quivering slightly, Bunnelby was soothed as Mabelle placed a hand down on its head, smoothing back fur. "It'll be okay, Lettuce. We're going to take it on and we're going to win!" she reassured, before taking the small Pokemon into her arms. The building itself was shrouded by an enormous swath of trees, flowers blooming everywhere in spring's gentle embrace. The evening's twilight made the trees reflect a deep purple against the coral-colored sky. This booming place wasn't like life back in Aquacorde Town, that was for certain. Mabelle had no real reason to be nervous- after all, she had only been greeted with friendly smiles and kind faces ever since she arrived here! Even the cafes served great-tasting lemonade that she and her team readily enjoyed during their stay. This was a public place. Yet, she was afraid of what might happen. If she lost, would she be laughed at? Would the battles hurt any of her party members? All she could think of were worries and insecurities that incessantly clouded her mind, but she cleared it just for a moment to open the door. "H-hello? I'm Mabelle Frederick... and I'm here to take the Gym Challenge. May I please... um, be shown the way in, if that's all right?" she asked, hoping to see an attendant there. |

Brushing off a few stray petals, and checking her sweet lil Kricketot was comfy, the receptionist perked up as someone entered the building. It hadn't been a particular quiet nor busy day, just another day of smile, nod, direct. The combee may be winding down for the day, but her job was done for a few hours yet!
"A challenge? Sure thing! If I could just grab your trainer card for a moment aaaand..." The kricketot beside the receptionist jiggled over, handing over a quick guide to the Gym as his partner tapped away at a keyboard, setting the trainer up in the system. "...we're good to go! Head on over to your right and--" she stopped to gesture a Leavanny over "--Pom will get you set up. Just let them know how you're going to make your way to the Gym Leader."
Today Pomegranate decided on a golden brown vest stiff with embroidered flowers adorning them. The leavanny nodded to both lady and bug, before gesturing for the newcomer - Mabelle, had they heard right? - to follow. Hopefully whichever option them took - paint, costume, or battle - her nerves wouldn't ruin it! Pom mentally took note to be ready to grab a bandaid if the girl pricked herself with a sewing needle.
Leading the way down a hall that gradually changed from photos to paintings, Pomegranate gave some encouraging hums and as the trio made their way deeper into the building. Three doors sat at the end - on one side was a door splattered entirely in paint, the word 'PORTRAIT' just able to be made out. Another was padded, 'DRESS UP' formed by different types of cloth. A plain door sat at the end, a small glass window showing the inside forest that took up the back end of the building, a simple 'FIGHT' engraved on a plate stuck to the door.
Their antennae bobbed as they took their spot besides the fabric door. Light humming continued from the bug, watching the challenger with gentle eyes and a smile. Idly they wondered if someone had made sure if Papaya was awake.
--
Welcome to your gym challenge! Be sure to pop on over to the full information thread if you haven't already to get a feel for what is going to go down.
For your next post, you will be picking one of the three options (fight, portrait, dress up), and if you chose dress up or portrait, writing a post on how your character goes about preparing for it. You are free to lightly NPC Pomegranate the Leavanny for help during dress up set up, or Papaya the Scolipede for the portrait option. Depending on how your character handles the situation, the way the three NPCs you may or may not have to fight act will be different, as well as the Gym Leader themself!
If you wish to go the plain three fights straight up, like this post and I will edit in your three NPCs to use!

this is new. ▼ » Alternative methods of making your way to the Leader, eh? Mabelle had come in expecting the average, battling three or so Trainers in order to get to the Santalune Gym Leader and fighting it out on top of some fancy structure.
Lettuce took the pamphlet from the teeny Kricketot, using his ear to hand it up to the much taller Mabelle.
Apparently, that was an option but not an imperative. Mabelle furrowed her brow in thought while Lettuce, previously hidden behind her legs, let out a tiny sigh of relief. Multiple battles in a row weren't especially fun on his end.
"I suppose... I'll take the Portrait route?" she said, turning to Pom. "Could you please lead my friend and I there, m'am?" she asked politely. It was becoming more and more common for Pokemon to be used as guides and coworkers rather than just battling partners, an integration that was still taking place in the more urban parts of this world. She waved goodbye to the receptionist. "Thank you very much for your help. I hope I do good enough!" she said, a small smile breaking through her rather quiet visage. This was going to be an interesting day. |

let's get started. ▼ » Mabelle had attended a couple of outdoor community art classes back in Aquacorde, but that was true of nearly everyone in Kalos- everyone loved and appreciated fine art, with the museum over in Lumiose being entirely devoted specifically to historical paintings and sculptures, not to mention the photographs and pastel art hanging in every household in the region.
At the very least, she was less nervous about her artistic skills than her battle skills. Pom lead her and Lettuce into a large room, filled wall-to-wall with blank easels and brown paper tablecloth already smeared with paint, ink, chalk and pencil lead.
The way this place looked so used, and from the looks of it, mostly by children, was a bit uplifting. Dozens of people had participated in this, a good deal probably a couple of years younger than her.
The room's centerpiece, though, was a rather enormous pink and purple Pokemon that looked a bit like a bug and a bit like an equine, standing up attentively with twin horns raised.
No wonder the doors in this place are so huge- it's for Pokemon like this to move around in... I've never seen a Bug-type Pokemon so enormous!
"H-hi!" greeted Mabelle, a bit more nervous than she had been with Pom. The Scolipede gestured to its saddle, the two attached sacks filled to the brim with paint tubes, boxes of pencils and packages of charcoals and pastels. The Scolipede's own shell was slightly splattered with cyan paint, but it only added to the creature's strange beauty.
"Oh, you want me to take some? All right... may I have a pencil, a felt pen and some watercolors?"
The Scolipede bobbed its head in a knowing nod, turning to the side to let Mabelle have her pick of supplies. A box of pencils, a box of felt tip markers and a box of paints and a few brushes were taken. A few cups of tepid, rainbow-colored water were scattered across the table. Watercolor must be popular!
Mabelle dragged an easel to the room's center, placing a canvas board on top. Lettuce huddled up to her intently, jostling a paintbrush of his own from within the sack and holding it tightly with his left ear. "We'll need some help... Chypre, come on out!" she exclaimed, opening a Great Ball to reveal her second Pokemon- a lepidopteran with lovely purple wings. The Vivillon which had once been a cute Spewpa caught in Santalune Forest had been a loyal companion to her since they had first met. It wore a black bow tie similar to the ribbons on Lettuce's ears. At once, the drawing began. With Chypre posing up front with as few wingbeats as possible, Mabelle began sketching an outline of herself, sitting at a desk with Chypre perched in her hair and Lettuce curled up in front of her. Lettuce himself began inking shakily, drawing fuzzy felt outlines over the finished pencil on the white canvas. After Chypre's outline was done, she switched places with Lettuce, who curled up into a silver-and-brown ball for the Trainer-Pokemon duo to quickly ink. A couple of mistakes were made in their inking, but they quickly blurred the crooked lines with a dab of water here and there. Once the ink was done, Lettuce held the easel down with his strong ears as Chypre flapped her wings, drying the ink quickly as well as blowing off some iridescent scales, sticking like silvery glitter on the wet ink. Now came the fun part- colors! Mabelle took a brush, dipping it in a cup before taking some crimson paint and coloring in her own fiery hair. She dipped some purple and brown for her Pokemon pair, who began coloring themselves excitedly, getting outside the lines somewhat but not really caring either way. The end result wasn't exactly perfect, but it was eye-catching- a girl painted on a white background with bright red hair, two Pokemon colored in fully brown and purple with some outside the lines to look like scrapbook art. The whole painting glistened a little in the lamp light, the Vivillon wing powder still shining. "Phew..." The whole process had taken over an hour of hard work, and the Scolipede was now napping comfortably in a large corner of the room. "Chypre? Lettuce? What do you think? Should we go show this off?" asked Mabelle, seeming more confident. |

With a portrait done, it's time to venture into the forest. This part has you hunting through the indoor forest for three different trainers to show your art off to - they could be camouflaged, sleeping in the boughs of a tree, or walking about with their pokemon! Papaya will keep watch, and offer up more supplies if needed - a trainer may not want to fight, but they may want to draw.
Based on your post, you will only need to fight one gym trainer. It seems they're a bit fussy about staying in the lines, and will comment about how Mabelle should've used Chypre's powder better! Seems they're stiff, but want to see Mabelle join some classes...
You are free to write out finding the other two trainers and their reaction, or time skip them. You are also free to time skip the required trainer battle, as long as you acknowledge it happened and any damage your pokemon have taken due to the fight. The gym trainers are under your control, as well as any wild or other extra pokemon you wish to show up, as long as you keep the information from the main gym thread in mind! This is all about your character, how they react, and what story you want them to be part of.
After finding the last trainer, you will be asked to stay at the battlefield while they try to find where the dickens Ziggy has disappeared to. They're probably sleeping somewhere or gotten caught up in some clay work, forgetting they had a challenger. Very responsible.

battle! art academy struggle bug! You knew the game and played it, it kills to know that you have been defeated, I see the wires pulling while you're breathing. WORDS 1128 NOTES bless me | “Thank you, Scolipede…” Mabelle praised, taking out a rawhide bone from her bag that the family Furfrou had always enjoyed. Scolipede were… kind of just big, venomous dogs, right? Covered in purple chitin with retractable neck-legs?
Luckily, the Scolipede happily clamped onto the treat, rolling around and nibbling on the Pokemon food kept inside. Good for them.
Taking the painting and walking out of the art room and into the vast battle arena, Mabelle found herself in a jungly world of giant ferns and bromeliads, the overpowering aroma of a greenhouse overcoming her senses. Chypre seemed elated, immediately hovering over to a gigantic crimson flower and sucking away happily at the nectar inside. This place certainly was a paradise for bug-types, but Lettuce seemed apprehensive.
Mabelle bent down, letting Lettuce climb up onto her shoulder as the team continued forward, Chypre finishing up his snack. A ways into the woods, a girl wearing a green chiffon dress with a grass-cloaked Wormadam in her arms greeted Mabelle, eyes wide and excited to see the piece she would have to gauge.
“You’re the challenger who took the painting path, right?” she asked. “Let me see what you did! Your Vivillon’s totally cute, by the way.”
Mabelle shyly turned to the girl in the dress, flipping the portrait of herself and both Pokemon for the lady to see.
“Oh? I like the color scheme! All those light pastels really make it such a fun and uplifting piece. Those wobbly lines and glittery scales… did your Pokemon help you out? That’s always a good thing to see. I’ll give you a nine out of ten and let you pass… but be careful! The next two judges have a way more discerning eye for art than I do!”
Mabelle continued on, before finding a second critic- a young man wearing a straw boater hat. A Surskit hopped along beside him, occasionally bubbling foam that it sent floating up to the glass ceiling. Lettuce bounced off to greet the new Pokemon, chittering and squeaking little remarks back and forth.
“Oh… hmm… the way you used that palette is awfully unique, but in my opinion you could have used more hard lines and brighter colors? Vivillon’s wing pattern is kind of off, too- the paint smears make it look blotchy, but they’re supposed to be perfect squares. On the other hand, I love all of the glitter…” he admitted. “I’ll give you a pass this time, ma cherie. No fighting. As for the next judge, though, she’s awfully harsh. She rarely lets anyone at all pass without quite the scuffle. Keep sharp!”
Continuing, the Trainer came to a third judge- a young-looking girl with her hair tied up in a fluffy ponytail and wearing a fancy white cardigan. Wasn’t she awful hot in this greenhouse? “My, my…” she commented, turning up her nose upon seeing the painting. “I can tell you tried, but your art is missing quite a bit. The scales used to airbrush it? Completely uneven. The lines? Tortured. A Spinda could draw straighter. Plus, the overall composition isn’t even well-centered. Dear challenger, haven’t you ever taken a proper art class?”
“N-n--”
“Don’t talk back! For now, we’ll settle a real test of skill in a Pokemon battle!” she exclaimed.
Santalune Gym Trainer Cerise wants to battle!
“Go, Yanma!”
Taking a Great Ball from her purse and opening it up, a Pokemon with fast-beating wings emerged from the light, cocking its head as it hovered from side to side.
Feeling a bit insulted and awfully self-conscious, Mabelle’s voice wavered as she told Lettuce to try taking this battle. Already annoyed by the other Trainer’s snooty attitude, Lettuce took the field stolidly, ready for action.
“Yanma, use Sonicboom!” Cerise instructed, and immediately a deafening blade of air was fired from the Yanma’s wings, ricocheting off the grassy ground and right towards Lettuce. The packet of air impacted with a burst, knocking back Lettuce and stunning him.
“Lettuce, please don’t give up! Use Double Slap!” cried Mabelle, worried for her Bunnelby’s well-being.
The Bunnelby gave a weak nod, before promptly springing upwards and pounding against the Yanma with its hardened ears. Four hits in, the Yanma was slammed right into the ground, stopping its flight short.
“Now, use Agility!”
Lettuce focused for a moment, before using a quick dash. His speed would be heightened, hopefully enough to stand toe to toe with the flying foe.
Just as he’d finished, the Yanma rammed into him with a sonic Quick Attack, sending him flying back in a daze.
“Are you okay, Lettuce? Hang on… “ said Mabelle, quickly narrowing down her options. “Try a Mud Shot!”
Lettuce defiantly rose up once more, using an ear to scrape wet soil from the ground and sling it right towards the opposing Yanma, who dodged quickly.
“Ha! You think a measly ground-type attack is going to hit my darling? She can just fly out of the way!” Cerise scolded. “You ought to know your type advantages by now. Yanma, Pursuit!”
The dragonfly chased after Lettuce, who panicked and tried to escape back to Mabelle, but was chased down and bitten hard on the ear, causing him to collapse, dazed from all of the physical blows.
“Aw, Lettuce… it’ll be alright. Take a rest, okay?” she comforted, before returning the fainted Pokemon.
“Chypre, it’s your turn. Go get ‘em!” Mabelle said, the lepidopteran fluttering forward to face the other bug type. “Try a Gust attack!”
Chypre quickly stirred up a whirlwind with her wings, launching it towards the Yanma and causing it to spin out like a disturbed helicopter, spinning dizzily until it hit the ground.
“Yanma, no! Get up for another Sonicboom!” Cerise shouted, but Yanma was still too dizzy to respond.
“Finish it off with Psybeam!” Mabelle said, and Chypre fired off a multicolored beam from its wings, iridescent dust scattering everywhere. Yanma was utterly dazed, enough so for the battle to be called to an end.
“... Yanma, darling, it’ll be okay…” Cerise said, withdrawing the dragonfly. “Ugh… while we had the upper hand, your second Pokemon really knocked us for a loop with that Flying-type move. Honestly, that Vivillon is your best advantage. It could be in your artwork, too- I know I was kind of hard-nosed, but why not enroll in some classes? My name is Cerise. I teach Monday through Friday.”
“O-oh, that’s nice… I’m Mabelle, a Pokemon trainer from Aquacorde. While I’d love to take you up on your offer, Cyllage is probably where I’m headed next after this.”
“That so? Awful quick stay… you should hang back and smell the flowers every now and again. Anyway, let me go find that Ziggy. Knowing him, he’s probably snoozing up in his bungalow. Stay right here, okay?”
