| The first steps into the wilderness were always the most exciting. Moving away from the little town of Aquacorde she'd always knows, Leona made her merry way across the cobblestone bridge that hung over the nearby river- the town's namesake. Beyond the bounds of human settlement, the grassy path eventually sprawled out into deep undergrowth filled with tall grass, bushes and trees. It stretched out for what was perhaps a mile until the woods grew thick with wiry evergreens and leafy fruit trees up ahead.
"This way! Oh my gosh, I've been wanting to head out this way for the longest time!" Leona exclaimed back to Gray, rushing ahead and doing a little frolicking in the dewy grass. Her new Pokémon seemed similarly excited, Kiki darting about in the wet grass and through the vein-like brooks and streams that dotted the route. It seemed like the perfect habitat for a terrestrial Water-type Pokémon.
Leona's excitement fizzled for a moment as she realized that Gray probably had very little background in Pokémon battling and capture.
"Hey, it just struck me... you've never really had a Pokémon battle before, right? I've already done it plenty of times, so do you want me to give you a little demonstration? I can find a wild Pokémon out here and catch it for you or something, and you and your Fennekin can watch!"

sleeping, like dying, delivers you from one world to the next - to rest in crypts and wake in gardens.
| "It's gorgeous," Gray commented, following a bit slower behind Leona and taking her time to look at all the scenery. Her Fennekin seemed more inclined to hurry it along, running ahead and occasionally barking at Gray to keep up the pace. The fox was almost more excited than she was.
At Leona's comment about battling, Gray looked a little bit taken aback - catch a Pokemon for her? No way. If Gray was working on the Pokedex, she'd do it herself! But it was true she hadn't had any real battle experience. Better to watch Leona and Kiki try one first.
"I'll catch my own Pokemon," she replied back with a small grin, "but I would appreciate a demonstration, if you're up for it." She'd only ever seen battles on TV. They made it look easy. The brunette glanced at her Pokedex, red shining in the sunlight on her wrist, as it brought up some information about her Fennekin. It knew three moves right now - Scratch, Tail Whip, and Ember - so hopefully those were enough to get the two of them through the forest and to Santalune.
"Have you battled much before?"

Mod?? | "Actually, yes! Nimbasa City has this amazing spot called the Battle Subway that runs lines all over the Unova Region. While it's a really decent method of transport, certain lines have one-on-one Pokemon battle tournaments that take place in different subway cars. I used my only Pokemon, a Minccino, to battle all sorts of rookie Trainers across Unova. I wouldn't call myself a veteran or anything, but I do know what I'm doing." she explained to Gray,
"I would have become even better and caught so many more friends if my parents didn't disapprove of it so much. Because of them, my darling Chiffon is still at home. If he were here, battling weaker Pokemon would be kind of a cakewalk."
Her new Froakie jumped up inquisitively.
"Aw, Kiki, nope. I don't have any actual cake for you. There'll be cafes in Santalune, I hear."
She turned back to Gray. "I'm going to head out into this tall grass and try and listen for rustling. You and Fennekin hang back a few feet so you can still see us, okay?"
And with that, she took a bag full of sunflower seeds out of her pocket- a tasty treat for both people and Pokemon.
Walking slowly into the undergrowth, she started scattering the bait around to attract a potential Pokemon encounter. Kiki jumped to attention, her eyes suddenly shifting to a hyper-aware stare.

CATERPIE FEmale 100% health DOCILE | wild CATERPIE appeared! Erupting from the soil, dirt was discarded off the little bug's horns as she shook and then scooted her way out of the hole. It had been fine crossing the little clearing underground and she had stayed protected from birds! You would have heard a giggle if she could.
Just inching like a little inchworm, the little caterpie made her way through the grass. Where was she headed? Only the most tasty grass spot in the entire little wooded area! She was so excited that she could almost taste the leaves already. Mmmm!
One more inch and she would be there!
Only to find.... FEET?
She hid in the grass a bit and cried softly to herself. Someone had stepped on the precious grass that was meant to be her meal. Oh what a torturous day!
But, what was that she was dropping?
Her little red horn twitched and she was startled when a sunflower seed plopped down on her head. Oh that was it! She popped out of the grass and started nagging at the girl.
How dare she ruin her perfect day! |

| "Huh?"
A tiny little Caterpie bopped up against Leona's leg, its little red horn digging slightly into one of her socks. It seemed upset. A few seeds had been dropped on its head. The Bug-type Pokemon barely came up past her feet, and she bent down.
Kiki seemed similarly interested and unfazed, poking the larval Pokemon's soft hide.
"Oh, what a little thing... is it really okay to fight something that small...?" she wondered, before giving Kiki an order.
"Use Growl, please?" she asked, before the Froakie let out a series of agitated high-pitched croaks and squeaks, attempting to challenge the smaller bug.
"It might prefer parsley as a snack... I'll keep that in mind. Hey, Gray, keep a close eye! This little Caterpie is about to be a Caught-erpie!" she said. Caterpie was common in a variety of regions, but this was her first time seeing one in the wild! Unova's bug-types were a lot more capable at their young stages, Sewaddle able to swirl leafy blades around and Venipede packed with debilitating venom.
She honestly didn't want to fight something so harmless, lest she accidentally cause it pain. It might as well be a child! |

sleeping, like dying, delivers you from one world to the next - to rest in crypts and wake in gardens.
| Gray could only manage a bit of a weak smile. She had big ambitions, so she knew it would take some time before she could get to the level she wanted, but... Leona having a head start made her feel somewhat jealous. Especially since the girl seemed younger than her. She had to be patient in the mean time.
Timidly, she followed Leona into the tall grass, but not before scooping up Mars with her arms. The Fennekin struggled at first against her arms, but the girl held steady even as sharp fangs dug into her hand.
"Don't be scared," she said softly, tensing but keeping steady as the teeth finally lifted up and a few apologetic licks took their place. Heat lifted up from the ears again. Gray was new at this - but so was Mars. It would take time for the two to learn to trust each other.
A low growl emitted from Mars as he spotted the Caterpie before the others. Leona seemed to be taking a slow approach; growl? It was a stat-affecting move, so she seemed to battle more by the books than Gray anticipated. She couldn't help but stifle a laugh at Leona's pun. Caughterpie. Nice.
"Ssh Mars, it's okay - let's watch, okay?"

CATERPIE FEmale 100% health DOCILE | wild CATERPIE appeared! Caught-erpie....
Seriously? This woman ruins her day and then decides to go and make very bad puns about it? She would pay so much for this.
After the less than menacing growl, she was ready to roll against this gigantic opponent. She allowed her defense mechanism to act as a very putrid scent began expelling from her red horns.
It was enough to make a fletchling leave the little Caterpie alone. If this girl was serious about catching her, she would need to suffer a bit first.
After her defense mechanism kicked in and the scent had covered the nearby area, string was shot towards the Froakie and it's trainer.
She would try her darndest to keep being free! |

| Well, at the very least, this very defiant Caterpie seemed to have zero problem with challenging a fight, and it quickly rolled towards them both, using a String Shot attack.
Speed lowered!
"Oh jeez, watch the shoes! These Mary Janes cost a fortune!"
The sticky white silk stuck Leona firmly to the ground, and poor Kiki fared no better, right sucker hand now pinned. Attempting to break out of the gooey trap, she had an idea of what to do next.
"Are you okay, Kiki? Try a Bubble attack!"
The Froakie puffed out a quick stream of water and iridescent foam to wash off the string and attack the wild Caterpie. It was so on! Even if she was currently stuck to the ground and open to attack, Special moves were still a viable option.

CATERPIE FEmale 71% health DOCILE | wild CATERPIE appeared! You could hear the Caterpie laugh to itself as the human and competing pokemon were stuck to the ground. The laugh was a little premature as the Caterpie soon realized that Froakie was not completely unable to attack.
The bubbles hit the small bug and she cried as she was thrown about a foot away from where she had been hit. After a few moments, two red horns popped up over the grass blades, looking for the target.
When she finally found the person again, she began to travel the distance towards the girl. A little guttural noise that could be considered a growl came from the bug. Even though the noise was much more like a squeak.
Caterpie sneered at the Froakie and then launched herself at the stationary being, going in for a tackle. |

| Even with such a small opponent, the battle between Caterpie and Froakie was tense. Gray was trying to not let herself get too jealous that Leona would likely get the first catch out of all the dex holders, but that was alright - she had time to catch up.
Mars had since calmed down, and was now watching the battle intently, twitching here and there as if wanting to jump in himself. No doubt he'd make quick work of a bug type, considering the typing, but Gray wasn't about to let the fox at it just about yet. Kiki was relatively obedient with Leona, but she also had more battling experience; Gray was new, and the fox had already proven himself to be hot-headed and impulsive. It would be tough going at the start.
"You got this!" Gray cheered with a smile, watching as the string shot was washed off somewhat with the bubble attack. Hopefully Leona wouldn't want to battle Gray anytime soon - Mars would have a tough time against the little water frog.

| Despite the ongoing battle, Leona turned to flash Gray a grin and a peace sign to indicate that everything was going all right. "Yeah! We're trying! I'm kind of rusty, so don't hold it against me if I'm a little flaky or whate--"
Wham!
Though the impact was light, Kiki was knocked back a tad and left with a bump directly on her nose, rubbing it out. At the very least, the impact had helped to free her from the silken restraints.
This sassy bug was gonna pay.
"Oh! Kiki, sorry about that..." Leona said, looking apologetic. "Try a Pound attack, please? Hold back a little!"
The Froakie seemed a little exasperated with it's trainer, flipping its toe pads in a 'yeah, I know' sort of gesture before bouncing up high and attempting to strike Caterpie with a webbed kick, making sure not to put the brunt of her weight into it.

CATERPIE FEmale 71% health DOCILE | wild CATERPIE appeared! The girl seemed to think that she was just a passing pokemon. That this battle wasn't serious enough to occupy her full attention. That she had the right to turn around to the girl behind her and speak. It infuriated the little Caterpie.
Able to dodge the frog's pound because of the speed deduction, the little caterpie raced towards the blonde girl and began her climb. She would attach herself to the girl's body and demand her attention!
She skittered up the girl's leg towards the girl's torso with an unseen smile on her face. It wasn't long until she reached the top of the girl's body. She sat on the girl's head and laughed her little laugh.
She teased the girl by shaking the little yellow end of her tail in front of the girl's face, poking her nose! |
